Alliance Intergenerational Initiative

In America, 11,000 individuals with a tremendous amount of skill and expertise turn 65 every day. As part of its intergenerational initiative, the Alliance for Strong Families and Communities is uniting organizations within its member network around best practices and new approaches for engaging and leveraging older adult talent to benefit the nonprofit human-serving sector. This initiative is designed drive positive outcomes and impact of the Alliance’s national network while uniting generations in a way that helps everyone benefit.

The Alliance sees two distinct ways for older adults to contribute to human-serving organizations and their communities:

  • Direct contributions to programs that foster supportive intergenerational relationships between older adults and younger counterparts
  • Professional contributions that build organizational capacity

Current Efforts: Second Acts for Strong Communities

The Alliance, in partnership with's Generation to Generation campaign, has launched Second Acts for Strong Communities, an initiative to help its network of human-serving organizations leverage the time and expertise of older adults looking to embark on encore careers that positively impact their communities. There are three major components to the initiative:

  • Implementing an intentional encore human capital approach at demonstration sites
  • Building a learning community and creating resources
  • Embedding encore talent as a human capital strategy within the Alliance network

We are pleased to announce the following organizations have been selected as demonstration sites:

Each demonstration site will retain one grant-funded encore fellow who will provide leadership on the project and support the recruitment and placement of additional encore talent. 

In a learning community, leaders and encore talent from each demonstration site will share insights and experiences resulting from their activities. The Alliance and will provide the infrastructure for the learning community by providing virtual and in-person knowledge sharing opportunities. Together, the learning community will gather knowledge, create replicable tools and materials, and build a network of ambassadors to scale intergenerational models through the Alliance network and nonprofit and public human-serving sectors.

The Generation to Generation Campaign:, a national organization that engages millions of people in later life as a vital source of talent to benefit society, has launched the five-year campaign, Generation to Generation, to mobilize 1 million people over 50 to show up for kids, and the Alliance’s ten site cohort will help them reach their goal. We will demonstrate powerful innovations at the ground level, alongside partners including Boys and Girls Club of America, First 5 Santa Clara, JumpStart, Metropolitan Family Service and Playworks.  Four communities including Boston, San Jose, Los Angeles and Seattle will also be stepping up to mobilize Americans over 50 in efforts to support children and youth.

Previous Projects: New Age of Aging

The Alliance New Age of Aging (NAA) initiative provided a strong foundation for the current intergenerational initiative. Funded by a five year, $2.6-million grant from Atlantic Philanthropies, the initiative engaged more than 70 percent of Alliance members from 2007-2012.

The initiative focused on equipping human-serving organizations to meet the needs of America’s large aging population through new or expanded programs and services.

Highlights of the initiative include:

  • 452 social service providers to receive a certificate in gerontology from Boston University’s Institute on Geriatric Social Work, helping to grow the number of knowledgeable and skilled professionals working with older adults
  • More than 50 strategically-directed webinars and workshops geared to elevate the needs of aging populations
  • 109 organizations to develop innovative programs and services to address the needs of aging populations in their communities
  • 13,000 older adults to receive mental health and counseling services, information and referrals, personal advocacy supports, volunteer services and case management. Many more were engaged in their communities as mentors and leaders
  • 40 organizations were paired and supported in mutually beneficial and collaborative mentor-mentee relationships
